The ministry of conferences
and retreats has had a profound impact on the Christian church,
especially in the last half of this century. Settings have
been developed where church leaders and laity can escape the
hustle and bustle of increased demand on time and person. Conference
centers have varied from rustic one-room cabins on a small
acreage to modern buildings on many acres of manicured grounds.
Programs have also varied from a quiet time alone on a bench
to several hours and even a week-long meeting where skilled
leaders teach large numbers of people. Basically, though, the
purpose has always been the same-to provide a place for people
to get away to renew their relationships with God and with
other people. This renewal usually involves spending time in
prayer, meditation, Bible study, and learning.
Pete and Ann Ramsey had served local churches as Minister
of Education and Minister of Administration for over forty
years. This experience gave them many opportunities to see
the great need for building better relationships among Christian
people. Conference and retreat settings have always been instrumental
in helping couples, families, and individuals work on relationships
in their Christian lives.
During the 1980's Pete and Ann participated in a course entitled
Masterlife, which encouraged renewal and commitment of the
Christian life. This study heightened their awareness of the
important need for the individual Christian to interact with
other Christians. They sensed God's leading to develop a setting
where people could get away from the busy pace of everyday
life for even a few hours. It would need to be conveniently
located, yet have a feeling of being separated. With God's
provision through wonderful Christian friends, the land was
secured to develop an adult Christian conference center. In
November 1997 Oaks Manor became a non-profit corporation.
Oaks Manor Conference and Retreat Center is a result of God's
goodness enacted through people who see the need for such a
place and the potential that it has. |
